Venous Ulcers

Chronic venous ulcers (CVU) occur in about 1% to 5% of the population. It has been estimated that CVU has cost the loss of two million working days per year in the United States. CVU are usually due to chronic venous insufficiency or venous hypertension. Risk factors include heredity, age, female sex, and obesity.

CVU usually occur on the inside of the ankle and frequently include skin changes ie. pigmentation, eczema, white atrophy, and dermatoliposclerosis.

Compression therapy is considered the most important conservative treatment of CVU. Treatment of the underlying venous hypertension includes endovenous laser ablation and ultrasound guided sclerotherapy.
